Murals are situated somewhere between the art and the social, between vandalism and a clever direction for urban development. Whether we talk about graffiti or street art, two distinctive categories that either oppose each other or evolve through one another, mural painting in public spaces has become an artistic category in its own right, in the last four decades. Artists are sometimes chased by the police and arrested, sometimes they exhibit in galleries, and their works worth so much nowadays that city councils everywhere have started to protect them with Plexiglas shields so as not to be vandalised or destroyed.
Although in Bucharest it is less known, the street-art movement is extremely active throughout the city. During the tour, we’ll meet some of the main artists that “paint” the walls of the city. We’ll discuss about graffiti, about how street-art helps with the urban development in deprived places of the city, about gentrification and its effects. The surprising element of the tour is Saddo’s latest work, made with the help of Pren, in the courtyard of Ion Mincu University of Architecture and Urbanism, a place that is normally closed to the public.
The tours within EXPLORATOR are part of OPEN LAB, the pilot project of Bucharest’s bid to the European Capital of Culture title – Bucharest 2021 in the second phase of the competition.
